I want my children to spend less time on digital devices. I want them to see beyond the electronic screen. I want them know what life feels like in their hands, not through a keyboard. I want all these things for my children living in a digital age, but there is more … I want my children to seek real life moments and real life connections because they want it for themselves, not because I said so. But how? Truthfully, I don’t know. But what I do know is that MY actions influence their actions. And raising children who relish real life experiences and real life connections begins with me … If I want my children to relish in the joys of a screen-free Saturday, I must express joy in going off the grid. If I want my children to experience the freedom that comes from blue skies overhead and crunchy leaves underfoot, I must partake in such freedoms myself. If I want my children to look directly into the eyes of those who speak to them, I must look up from my devices and listen to their words. If I want my children to value experiences rather than things, I must celebrate a spontaneous run through the sprinkler, good conversation, and crickets that lull us sleep. If I want my children to seek real life moments and real life connections now and in the future, I must live by example. I can’t expect the world to show them life is best lived with open hands, open eyes, and an open heart. It must begin with me. © Rachel Macy Stafford 2013
