I prayed Isha in a masjid in Mirdif Dubai. After the Salah I noticed a group of children gathering around the old imam. He pulled out a bag of candy from under the mimbar and gave them each one. It really made me smile. Some might say that the kids are coming to the masjid for the candy and not the prayer - I say that the imam understands child psychology. Yes it might be that prophet Muhammad did not give candies (they did not have any) but he treated children with kindness which creates a positive association between the masjid and the child. The child will remember getting candy in the masjid - he is to young to fully understand the purpose of him being there - but he will associate getting candy and feeling happy with a person who is religious and with the masjid and the Salah.
