When we take kids for shopping to the supermarket, it is a hectic day because parents have to be mentally prepared. Not only do forget what we had to buy, we end up buying stuff which we don’t need at all. Moreover upset faces and the question time begin “Why were we not allowed to buy those lollies?” “Why can’t we buy those chips?” It is important to explain to kids about eating halal food. I explained to them the concept behind eating halal. I told them that when we eat meat we actually kill that animal, all the three except my oldest one where surprised...lol. I told them that we have no right to kill that animal, because Allah created it and only He gives death. But Allah has given us permission to eat certain animals, like the chicken, goat, lamb, cow..I did not want to go further down the list because, it will confuse them. Silence speard in the car..lol they were all so surprised. I said but we need to seek Allah’s permission and slaughter the animal by taking Allah’s name, by which we mean, Ya Allah you have bought this to life and only you have the right to take give it death, because you have permitted us to eat this, we seek your permission and evoke your name before we make it permissible for us to eat.” ( I had to explain them in their language)Then we slaughter it in the easiest way so that it feels no pain at all. Only then we can eat it. But the lollies and chips you were asking has gelatine which is made of animal stuff which is not slaughtered by asking Allah’s permission, “Who wants to eat those chips and lollies now?” I asked. SILENCE spread. It is now another hectic time, when they visited the super market again, the only thing on their mouth is Halal, halal halal...lol..My youngest one even took fruit in his hand and started asking me “mama can we buy this? Is this halal?...lol. It is good to see kids being so responsive and so understanding when they get these complicated things simple, this is possible when we speak at their level. Thank you for reading...Hope I made you smile. By Sharmeen Syeeda —
