My daughter asked me a very important question, and I am very sure that your kids might have asked the same question to you all. She asked me, “How does Allah look like?” I understand that she is entering into an age where, she has gained quite a lot of knowledge of this world; she is now exploring the deen she practices every day. It is important for us as parents to recognise this responsibility and explain to them the truth of Islam. We don’t have to make it up, we don’t have to feel hesitant, we don’t even have to make it complicated, we just need to keep it simple, and make them understand in a language, which they understand the best. I see that she always does a bit of research on Islam, when I say something, she always questions me with a “why”, I love the way she is inquisitive about her deen, and when she gets her answer she is satisfied. Though I get frustrated sometimes, I never abandon her on her questions regarding her deen, because I feel that in her initial years of life, she needs to know the deen she is practicing is just not a book, but a way of life and she should be able to accept it wholeheartedly. Well, coming to the answer, I told her that man is made weak. She asked me how is that, to give her an example I asked her to stare at the sun, when she could not do so, she told that her eyes were getting blurry, I explained to her, that if we were to stare at the sun, even for 10 seconds we cannot do it, because Allah has not given our eyes that power likewise in the night sky, we see the stars but cannot see the entire space, again our eyes have not got that power, but we know that, all this is just dunya, new technologies have made this possible now, but still we cannot see it through the naked eye. So there are some limitations Allah has set for us, we cannot go beyond. The Creator of this universe, The Creator of the things in this world is Unique. God has made everything in this world, and written its fate, that everything in this world living or non living will come to an end. We went through a list of things, like cars, trees, pens, water, land, sky, animals....I loved the way she was thinking hard, to come up with something she could say, which did not have an end... , but she admitted that everything has an end , Alhamdulillah. I went further with by explaining to her that the creator cannot look like humans, because we have a face, body, blood, eyes, nose...etc. etc. We eat, drink, run, use the toilet and I showed her my finger which I had burnt while cooking that, If we were to get burnt, this is how we feel the pain and this is how our finger turns into, black with full of puss.... . Then I asked her do you think God can be like us, dirty? She said “no way!”. Well, then I told her that God is Pure and cannot be like us humans. Moreover, Allah has not given us the power of imagining Him, Allah is beyond words and beyond imagination. Our eyes don’t have that power, nor does our brain have the imagination. We need to accept that “There is no god but Allah, and there is none worthy of Worship other than Allah”. But we know Allah by His attributes to keep it simple I said Allah is the highest degree of Power, and reminded her of the 99 names of Allah she learnt. We keep the discussion ongoing mostly the time, when we are driving to school. May Allah give us strength, to be successful in delivering the message. Ameen. . I thought I would share this with all of you, and wish to hear from you all. JazakAllah for the patience while reading this long note. I am sorry if I have hurt anyones feelings or beliefs.
